Cheque scam in Stony Plain and Spruce Grove

mailfraudLocals need to beware of mysterious cheques coming from “Uni-fund” or the “Bank of Nova Scotia.”  RCMP say that the letter accompanying the cheque tells the receiver that the money is a reward for their participation in a survey.  However, when the cheque is deposited into your bank account the fraudsters gain access to your banking information, and start withdrawing cash.

The letters come in a plain envelope, with no return address.  Police warn residents that if they receive one of these cheques, they should not deposit it at the bank.

If you receive a fraudulent cheque, please contact Spruce Grove RCMP at 780-962-2222, or Stony Plain RCMP at 780-968-7267), Phonebusters at 1-888-8501, or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
