hail2A thundering hail storm whipped through Stony Plain on August 1st, starting just after 5pm.  Residents reported hurricane like conditions, and hail the size of golf balls, especially on the south side of the town.  In Westerra, houses were decimated with hail damage, many looking like they had been shot by machine guns.  In addition, high winds reaching 80 km/h tore down trees, flipped signs, and lifted roofs off their moorings in some south-west homes.

Power was out for hours throughout Stony Plain, especially in the center of the town (although homes on the south end were not affected).  Traffic lights were out in many intersections.

Flooding was also a problem on many streets, especially on Golf Course Road and in residential areas.  Vehicles stalled in deep water, and many residents had to manually clear their sewer drains.  The creek running through the town also flooded, overflowing many times over it’s normal size.

High winds, rain and power outages were also reported in Spruce Grove, and Parkland County.
