Stu Barnes Day moved to October 7

The City of Spruce Grove will celebrate ‘Stu Barnes Day’ on October 7, 2009 by renaming a popular local hockey rink in honour of the National Hockey League veteran.
The event was originally scheduled to take place on September 12, but had to be postponed due to scheduling difficulties.

At a regular council meeting earlier this year, Spruce Grove City Council unanimously voted to bestow the honour on the NHL veteran and current Assistant Coach of the Dallas Stars.

The October 7 festivities will include the unveiling of a new sign, changing the name of the east venue at Spruce Grove Agrena to Stu Barnes Arena. A glass showcase of Barnes’ own personal memorabilia in the entrance and a mural on the east wall of the building will also honour his accomplishments.

Barnes began his junior hockey career with the St. Albert Saints in 1986 and was drafted by the Winnipeg Jets in 1989, playing 16 seasons in the NHL. He was a member of the gold medal-winning Team Canada at the 1990 World Junior Hockey Championships in Helsinki, Finland and is a 2007 inductee of the City of Spruce Grove’s Awards of Excellence, in the Athletics category.
