New Stony Plain high school welcomes students to Westerra

New Westerra campus

On February 8th, Memorial Composite High School welcomed students to its new school building in Westerra.  The former NAIT campus has been completely overhauled in a construction process that began in 2008.  The completion of the project was late, with the original projected date being the fall of 2009.  The total cost of reconditioning the Westerra campus is estimated at over 40 million dollars.

According to architectural firm Manasc Isaac:

The newly renovated and expanded school will house 1500 students and 100 staff. The project will occupy the existing school building with additions to accommodate a new gymnasium and science wing.

The Westerra campus was retrofitted to meet the current Silver LEED® standards for green, ecologically sustainable construction.

The old school, which was built in 1949, was located centrally in Stony Plain, adjacent to the Multicultural Center.  The Parkland School Division has not indicated what will happen to the property, now that the building is vacant.
