The Town of Stony Plain has lowered its flag out of respect for Const. Chelsey Robinson of the Stony Plain RCMP Detachment. The 25-year-old officer, originally from Picture Butte, Alta., was killed in a two-vehicle accident on June 21 while in the line-of-duty.

“This is a sad time and tremendous loss for the Town and the RCMP, but most importantly, to everyone that knew Const. Robinson personally,” said Ken Lemke, mayor of Stony Plain. “On behalf of council, administration and our residents, I want to express our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Const. Robinson during this incredibly difficult tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”

Const. Robinson had been a regular member of the RCMP for seven months and had been performing general duties out of the Stony Plain Detachment.

The flag will remain at half-mast until after the funeral.

One 17 year-old youth from Edmonton has been arrested for aggravated assault. Two other teenaged males, one 16 and the other 17, currently have warrants for their arrest.

About 75 teens were partying at the lot, because they didn’t want to go to the “dry grad” party in Edmonton. None of the names of the accused can be released under the Young Offender’s Act.

RCMP officers will be more visible in the community, adding foot and bicycle patrols to their regular vehicle patrols, through to the end of the September long weekend.

“The RCMP’s enhanced summer schedule helps keep our community safe during a season when there is a lot going on here,” says Mayor Stuart Houston. “People are spending more time outside, and our special events draw a lot of visitors.”

Bike and foot patrols give officers better access to areas like parks and trails which are more popular at this time of the year. The RCMP officers will also continue to work with Spruce Grove’s Community Peace Officers to integrate their coverage of events like Canada Day celebrations and Grove Cruise, which draw large numbers of people to the city each summer.

“Having a more visible RCMP presence also gives us more opportunities to meet and get to know our local police officers,” says Mayor Houston. “Having that close relationship with them is an important aspect of our Safe City initiative, which helps make Spruce Grove the community of choice.”
